Di Vapor asked:

Before Installation

Steam showers come in modular acrylic units as well as custom made. A bathroom needs to be prepared before a steam shower can be put in. By its very nature a steam shower produces a lot of steam and the bathroom and shower enclosure needs to be water proof or mould and mildew will begin to grow. People with diabetes, high blood sugar, who are pregnant or very young, should consult their doctor before using a steam shower.

Modular Steam Showers

Modular steam showers are pre-fabricated and fit into a standard shower footprint. A modular steam shower can be retro-fitted into a bathroom that already exists. Modular steam showers average between $3,000 and $5,000. Modular showers do have various options, such as number of shower heads, often depending on the brand of the steam shower. Modular steam shower bases can be whirlpool bathtubs. They usually come in white and off-white colours.

Custom Steam Shower

Custom steam showers are usually created in new home builds and are more expensive then modular showers. Custom steam showers are tiled on the walls, floor, and ceiling. The tiles are set on mortar bed which ensures complete water resistance. The doors have a seal too keep the steam contained. Most steam showers also have a seat so one can sit and enjoy the steam. A custom steam shower has more options than a modular steam shower: colour is one such option. Custom steam showers can be made in any colour the tile comes in which, with the vast array of selection, is virtually any colour. The tiles themselves can have designs and texture also. There are also arrays of shower head options.

Luxury Steam Shower Suite

For those willing to spend the money, luxury steam shower suites are very nice. A steam shower suite can cost between $20,000 and $30,000. Luxury steam shower features may include double headed showers, extra shower heads on the walls, massage shower heads, rain shower heads. Other options are foot hydro-massage, radios, iPod setups and telephones. A steam shower suite may also have waterfalls and chromo-therapy (coloured lights).

Steam Shower Generators

Steam shower generators are a critical part in a steam shower and can cost between $500 and $1600. The steam shower generator warms the water and produces the steam which is then released in the shower with an insulated nozzle. The generator can be installed within 25 feet so can be hidden in the bathroom and need not be an eye sore. A steam shower generator has two controls. The controls can be located inside or outside of the enclosure or one inside and one outside. One control shows the temperature and has temperature control and shut off knob. The other control is a timer and will shut off the steam automatically. A good generator is quiet and produces steam quickly. Another good feature in a steam shower generator is one that has a steady flow of air and not just short burst.

Plumbing question. Is there a potential problem in removing and replacing wall shower head pipe?

By admin | February 7, 2010

ecoblens asked:

Just bought a new shower head that comes with a straight pipe that goes thru the wall, to which a rain type shower head is attached. Currently there is a bent pipe thru the wall that is not suitable for this head. Is there a potential problem in unscrewing the pipe thru the wall and replacing it? Obviously I cannot see what is happening, and I don’t want to tear down a tile wall.

Mark Franklin asked:

7 Things Besides Price to Consider When Buying a Low Flow Shower Head

You have many options when looking for a new low flow shower head.  Recently I worked with a major REIT (Real Estate Investment Trust) with thousands of apartment units to help them find the best shower head that met the following criteria:

Saves water and energy Provides a quality showering experience Is attractive and matches their décor and Is less than $40 each

After trying showerheads that cost as little as $2.00 each to as much as $40 each in several properties in their portfolio, we found there are 7 factors that make up a good shower head.

1.       Pressure Compensating Technology

Many newer models have built in pressure compensating components so no matter what the water pressure is – as low as 20 psi to as high as 80 or 90 psi – the gallons per minute used and the feel of the shower remains fairly consistent.

Since water pressure varies from building to building and region to region this was a very important factor

2.       Full Face Spray Pattern

The spray pattern is a major factor in a determining how a shower feels.  What we found is that people overwhelmingly liked the full face spray with many nozzles covering the full face of the showerhead.  This spreads out the water so that it doesn’t sting your skin like many of the cheaper brands we tested.

3.       Aesthetics

Like many consumers my client wanted elegant looking shower heads without the cost associated with higher end fixtures.  Fortunately there a many options to choose from that will match just about any décor including polished chrome and brass and brushed nickel.

4.       Anti-clog Spray Nozzles

Showerheads with metal faces tend to clog up and deteriorate much faster than the newer rubberized showerheads.  The flexible nozzles can be cleaned by running a fingernail across the surface while the water is running.  This reduces maintenance time and extends the life expectancy of the equipment.

5.       Uses under 1.6 gallons per minute

The maximum flow rate allowed by law is 2.5 gpm.  One of the goals of our study was to determine if an even lower flow showerhead (there are a number available) could meet their criteria.  Turns out a few did.

6.       Non-aerating

Aerating is the introduction of air into the water flow path to enlarge the size of the water bubbles.  This makes it feel like there is more water than there really is.  Unfortunately the addition of the cooler air means that hotter water is required to maintain the same temperature.

Comfort (aerated) versus energy conservation (non-aerated).  Luckily we found a few non-aerated models that provide a comfortable showering experience as well.

7.        Energy Conserving

I have addressed 2 features that conserve energy – pressure compensating (at higher pressures more water is forced through the nozzles of non-pressure compensating fixtures wasting water and energy) and non-aerating technologies.

Another feature I found that conserves water and energy is a technology that turns off the water after it heats up during the warm up phase of your shower.  When you are ready to step in just pull a chain and your warm shower is ready for you.

Many times when the shower is turned on in the morning you have to wait several minutes for the water to heat up.  Most of us tend to turn and do something else and return when there is steam in the shower.

By turning off the water as soon as it’s ready several gallons that normally are wasted are conserved every time you take a shower.

We found that even though we had a number of showerheads that met 4 or 5 or even 6 of the criteria outlined above, only one met all 7.  The Evolve Roadrunner Low Flow Shower Head.  Here are the features and benefits that make it the best showerhead for my not only my client’s money but yours as well:

1.59 gpm flow rate Full face spray pattern Elegant look - comes in chrome or nickel Shower feels great even with lower water pressures Anti-clog spray nozzles – very easy to clean ShowerStart – see number 7 above Non-aerating – doesn’t add air to the water, uses less energy and still feels great

The best price I have found is $37.00 at Amazon.com.  Search for Roadrunner Shower Head and sort by price – lowest to highest.  If you’re looking for more than just 1 or 2 check out The-Energy-Conservation-Store.com and contact them for a quantity discount.

Bradley C. Williams asked:

Did you know that low flow shower heads use between 1.6 - 2.6 gallons per minute while old shower heads use 2.6 - 5.2 gallons per minute? Probably a silly question to ask, but the most surprising part about these stats is that you can’t actually tell a difference in the water pressure.

Now I realize that most everybody takes showers now days due to convenience, but some people enjoy taking baths instead of showers on occasion or maybe even frequently. Truth is, few people think about how much more water usage is involved to fill up the tub.

I know that I’m not going to talk you into never filling your bathtub again but just so you are aware, the average person uses 78 gallons of water every time they take a bath? When you compare that to a 10 minute shower with a low flow head that uses only 16 gallons, now what do you think? Don’t forget, you are not just wasting water but the electricity or gas it took to heat that water too, not to mention the sewage or waste water bill that goes along with it.

So in essence if you have city water, you’re paying for bathing in 3 different ways. You pay for the water itself, the electricity or natural gas to heat the water used, and you’re paying for the sewage when the water goes down the drain.

I aim to simply make you aware of possible resource wastes and while you are putting some real effort into saving water and money, check your toilet’s gallon per flush or (GPF). You may have an older toilet that uses 7, 5, or 3.5 GPF while the new water saving standard is 1.6 GPF. You can even get a dual flush version that uses either 1.6 or 0.8 GPF depending on; well we’ll just say #1 or #2. A dual flush toilet will easily save you up to $100 per year on water and sewage or waste water bills.

Do you have a leaky faucet?

If you do, you should be aware that one drip per second can add up to 165 gallons per month. To better put this into perspective, 165 gallons is more than the average person uses in two weeks. With this in mind you will want to fix your leaky faucet as soon as possible since waiting can cost you more than a new shinny one.

Jim Riley asked:

You might disagree, but hear me out on this…filtering your shower water is just as important as filtering your drinking water. You might ask, how could this be so important? All I need is water and soap to make my body clean. So you think.

A shower head water filter is something that you should consider in promoting good health for your family.

Many of my previous articles talk about chlorine in our water. Simply put, it just isn’t good for us to ingest. Filtering our drinking water is a great first step. But incidentally, chlorine can enter our bodies during a regular shower. If we don’t use shower head water filters, chlorine can be vaporized and enter our bodies as we inhale chlorine gas. It can also be absorbed through the skin.

The physical properties of chlorine do not allow it to exist freely in nature. It is found only in combination with other chemicals, primarily sodium chloride, from which it is electrolytically extracted for commercial use.

Shower head water filters can eliminate most of this undesirable chemical.

Liquid chlorine is a clear amber fluid with a density approximately 1.5 times that of water. Under atmospheric temperature and pressure it evaporates readily, one pound forming about five cubic feet of a highly irritating greenish gas. Are you starting to see the importance of shower head water filters?

I don’t know about you, but this chlorine is bad stuff. It isn’t even found naturally in our environment. I needs to be artificially produced.

Also when I was reading about chlorine, it stated that at elevated temperatures, mixed with water, it is highly corrosive to most metals. I’m sure that you can guess that chlorine is having adverse affects on every inch of your plumbing, including those faucets and fixtures that you have paid good money for.

The best shower filters don’t cost as much as some of those fancy faucets.

Some of our water supplies have as much chlorine in them as the common swimming pool. Do you remember how your skin and hair felt after a weekend in the pool? It strips our skin and hair of its’ natural oils, leaving it dry, itchy and flakey.

This information alone is enough for most smart people, like yourself to consider using a shower head water filter. But what are the best shower filters to buy?

First of all, we need to get rid of the chlorine. The best shower filters that I have found for the money are those that offer dual stage filtration.

The first stage reduces chlorine and enhances PH balance, using a natural copper/zinc media.

The second stage uses and carbon type filter to remove other chemicals and VOCs.

Users of shower head water filters will notice softer skin and better feeling hair.

Asthma and allergy sufferers benefit and find relief from some of their symptoms, due to the decrease in chlorine gas released into the air during a shower.

In conclusion, if you concerned about your familys’ health, the installation of a shower head water filter may be one of the best things that you can do for them.

I want to install a rain shower head and hand held shower in my bathroom. What diverter system do I need?

By admin | January 21, 2010

d’lee asked:

My fiance and I are remodeling our bathroom and would like to install a rain shower head and hand held shower. What shower accessories are necessary for this kind of installation? I know we need a diverter, but I don’t know what kind. Is there anything else that’s needed? Also, does the diverter used have to be part of that particular shower series or can it be a diverter from a different brand?

Healthy Harry asked:

ng>Shower Head Bacteria and Disease - Your Shower Head May Make You Sick

A recent study by Norman R. Pace of the University of Colorado found that a bacterial organism, a relative of the bacteria that causes tuberculosis, called Mycobacterium, may be ready to shower down on you every time you get under it.

The study indicated that over the years this buidup of dangerous bacteria in your shower head may be making you sick. Because the shower head aerosolized the bacteria into the air, it is recommended you turn the shower on and leave the room for a minute.

The bacteria will still be in the air but at least will not rain down on you. The first spray of the shower is suppose to be the worse. Anyone with breathing problems should replace their shower head as soon as possible according to the study.

The study claims that people who get water from municipals city water supplies were much more prone to have a heavier build up of Mycobacterium in their shower heads. People who got their water from wells had considerably less buildup or this dangerous bacteria in their shower head.

The study also claims that shower heads should be changed 2 to 4 times a year depending on what water supply you are using.

This report is definitely worth reading!
