how do I fix a leaking shower head?

it’s a pull knob (single knob)to turn the water on, and it’s dripping constantly and driving me nuts not to mention wasting water. I guess it’s the seal as I have changed the shower head using teflon tape and it is not that rubber washer. what I need to know is what to take off of where the knob is to take to the hardware store to replace. what is the part and what is it called?
ok so how do I know if its the diverter or the cartridge and which is which?

      It’s either a diverter valve or it sounds like you need a new cartridge. Take it with you when you go so you can get the exact same one.

      The part you turn the cartridge in which they go back of the part you pull hard on which brand it so you have to switch where water off remove the stem piece in the house water from one knob was attached to switch where water behind it so you only and you only have to remove that nut.
